世の中のコットンはほとんどが白色。しかし世の中の服が様々なカラーで売られるのは、服になるまでに「染め」の工程を通るからです。
・製品にしてから染める「製品染め」
・その前の生地で染める「生地染め」
・その前の糸で染める「糸染め」
・その前の綿で染める「綿染め」
どの段階で染めても同じものができるわけではなく、何染めにするかによって出来ることが変わります。

ラフィ杢の作り方は「綿染め」です。ラフィをベースに、染めた綿をブレンドしています。 綿染めでは、複数の色をあえて混ぜきらない“粗挽き”の糸を作ることができます。 また例えばグレー色を作るとしても、黒と白だけでなく少し違う色を入れて色の深みを出すことができるのも綿染めの魅力です。

ラフィ杢もそうした綿染めならではの粗びき感、複雑な色味が特徴ですが、その最大の魅力は自然でわざとらしくない表情です。 これは意図的に作ろうと思ってもできるものではなく、私たちが大切に維持し続けてきた使い込まれた機械を使い、職人が手間ひまをかけて紡ぐからこそ生まれるものです。

ヴィンテージスウェットには必ず杢糸が使われていました。そしてそれを再現するためにラフィ杢はとても相性が良く、長年多くのお客様に使われてきました。 その理由はただ見た目が近いからというよりも、糸の作り方そのものがヴィンテージだからだと思います。

Most cotton in the world is white. The reason clothes are sold in various colors is that they go through a dyeing process before they become garments.
- Garment Dyeing: Dyeing the product after it has been made into a garment.
- Fabric Dyeing : Dyeing the fabric before it is cut and sewn.
- Yarn Dyeing : Dyeing the yarn before it is woven or knitted into fabric.
- Fiber Dyeing : Dyeing the raw cotton fibers before they are spun into yarn.
You cannot achieve the same result regardless of the stage at which the dyeing is performed; the choice of dyeing method dictates what can be achieved.

The method used to create Raffy Top is Fiber Dyeing. We blend dyed cotton fibers into Raffy. Fiber dyeing allows us to create a "coarsely blended" yarn, where multiple colors are deliberately not mixed completely.             Also, for example, even when creating a grey color, the appeal of fiber dyeing is the ability to add slightly different colors—not just black and white—to achieve a greater depth of color.

Raffy Top is characterized by the coarsely blended texture and complex coloring unique to fiber dyeing, but its greatest appeal is its natural, effortless but authentic appearance. This look cannot be intentionally created; it only comes from the well-used, long-maintained machinery that we have carefully continued to operate.
             

Heathered yarn was always used in vintage sweatshirts. Raffy Top is highly compatible with reproducing this look and has been used by many customers for years. The reason for this is perhaps not just that the appearance is similar, but that the vintage nature of the machine and the yarn-making process is reflected in the final product.
